Introduction: Hello! (Tech Tip: Embedded YouTube)

Hi, everyone! My name is Phoi Nguyen, but I go by Michelle. People have always questioned the origin of Michelle, but even I am not too sure where it came from since it's not my middle name or on my birth certificate or anything. To be honest, my parents have called me Michelle instead of Phoi since I was a wee baby. Hm.. weird right? Whenever I was young, I always questioned it and they would just say "We liked the name."

I am currently a Senior at OU. This is my last semester here! I'm from Tulsa but I definitely like Norman more than Tulsa since it's closer to OKC. I just like OKC because there are more things to do there than in Tulsa. Going to college was a rough transition for me because I came from a pretty sheltered family, but I'm used to everything at this point! I am majoring in Biology, with a minor in Psychology. If all goes smoothly, I will graduate in the spring and, hopefully, be attending OU's College of Pharmacy this coming fall. I am also part of an Asian-interest sorority on campus called Phi Delta Alpha. Here are my beautiful sisters!

If you have read my "Favorite Places" post earlier, you will have already figured out that I was born in Vietnam! I came to the States when I was around fours years old and I have visited once or twice since then. I hope to visit Vietnam again soon to see how much the country has changed since has been around ten years since I last visited.

I enjoy reading, watching movies/TV shows, eating (I'm definitely someone who lives to eat, not the other way around), and singing! My passion for reading has dwindled a bit since the beginning of college because of the amount of work piled on me doesn't let me curl up with a good book, but I'm hoping on remedying that this year. My favorite genres are science fiction, romantic comedy, and the occasional horror. If you have any good recommendations, let me know! I also love animals, especially when the animals are little baby animals. That's when they are the cutest!

I am an only child so it gets pretty lonely, but luckily I have my dog to keep me company. He's a miniature pinscher and I don't have a picture of him since I'm not too good with cameras and the only pictures I have of him are from when he was a few months old. He turned seven years old this summer. But this one will suffice since he looks like this.

  1. Hi Michelle! I love all the pictures of cute animals in your introduction! Animals are the best- don't you just love how they are there for you unconditionally? Congratulations on graduating this year! I am also a senior and I will be graduating too and I am so excited! I have senioritis bad (aka I don't want to do any work this semester), but this class has been fun so far and it is a nice change to be reading for fun and writing in a blog instead of the traditional classroom assignments!

    1. Hi Sydney! Haha thank you! I love seeing pictures of cute animals. It always makes my day better when I get to pet a cute animal or look at them online. Congratulations on graduation too! Oh my gosh, don't even get me started on my own senioritis, it's really really bad. I literally just want to lay in bed and watch Netflix or Hulu all day and half of my classes are online!

  2. Michelle, that's so cool that we (Sydney, you and myself) are all seniors! The real world is about to start, it's kind of scary. I totally understand the whole "living to eat" thing. I absolutely love food. I have no self control when it comes to eating healthy. I have actually been accepted to OU's College of Pharmacy for this coming fall, that would be so awesome if we had classes together! I feel like you kind of look familiar, we've probably had other classes together. I hope everything goes well with your application/interview stuff. Let me know if you have any questions about anything!

    1. Haha I figured that there would be a lot of seniors in this class! You're right about the "real world" thing. We're going to have to start adulting pretty soon and I really wish I could turn back time to go back to kindergarten where I got to take mid-afternoon naps in school! Congratulations on getting accepted to OU's College of Pharmacy! I'm keeping my fingers cross that I can get in this year since I just got an interview invitations! I definitely want to hit you up on a few pointers regarding the MMI interview. I really don't want to flub it up since my interview is the last one of the year D:

  4. Michelle, I wish you the best of luck in your last semester as an undergraduate student. Also, I hope that pharmacy school works out in your favor. We're both pre-health focused career paths. Furthermore, I enjoy singing and reading as well. Romantic fantasy is one of my favorite genres. I agree that I have pleasure read less in college due to the heavy work load. A few novels that I like are House of Night, City of Glass (Shadowhunter series), and the Divergent. The most recent book I've read is more inspirational it's called "Quiet," it's about being an introvert in an extroverted world. It's really great. Also, the picture of your dog is super cute. Do you miss seeing him and your kitten?

  5. Michelle, good to meet you! I am a senior as well. I loved the pictures that you chose to express yourself - I'm in a sorority and love animals too, so we really do have a lot in common! I’m very excited to continue reading from your blog and to get to learn alongside you in this class!

  6. Hello Michelle, I have to say the story of your name made me laugh a little! I too call Tulsa my home, but agree it lacks things to do. Vietnam is on my bucket list so I hope to go there soon too. Your dog is very photogenic; I would never be able to get my dog to pose for the camera like that.

  7. Hi Michelle! I am also from Tulsa and love it, but I definitely understand why you would like OKC more. There really is sooooo much more to do here. I'm also an only child. It's pretty cool that we share that in common since I rarely find other people who are only childs as well. I wish I could get a dog to keep me company haha

  8. Hi Michelle! I am also a senior here at OU and hopefully I will graduate this spring as well! I am also from Tulsa. Biology was always one of the harder subjects for; it is cool that you are doing it for your major though! I wish you the best of luck in getting into pharmacy school and going on to be a great pharmacist!

    1. Hi Ryan! That's great that you're able to graduate this year. It's pretty surreal, especially when I recently picked up my graduation gown last week during Graduation Gear Up. Thank you for the well wishes haha I'll try to do well wherever I end up :) Good luck on wherever you go too!

  9. Hi Michelle. I think both of your names are beautiful. I love baby animals. I think they’re absolutely precious. Something on my to-do list before graduating is to visit the baby tigers at this outdoor zoo. I believe it close to Norman. I don’t remember the name off the top of my head, but I feel like you would enjoy something like that. I’m majoring in Psychology/Pre-Dental with a Biology and Human Relations minor. My favorite biology course was probably Intro to Zoology. What was your favorite?

  10. Hi Michelle, congratulations on almost graduating! I’m sure Pharmacy school will also be challenging but it’s still exciting to finish undergrad! I laughed when you wrote about being someone who lives to eat because I’m the same way! I also totally understand not being able to pleasure read during college but I hope you’re able to get some time to. I’m working on that too. You’re sweet pup is so cute!

  11. Hey Michelle,
Congrats on being a college grad soon. I really liked your post and think your legal name is unique and awesome. We have similar stories about what we go by actually. I am legally Anna but my family has basically called me Annie my whole life. When I asked them why they decided to do that they basically told me the same thing your parents did. I think its awesome that you are majoring in Biology. I think most sciences are very interesting except Chemistry. I also have two cats myself and I love all animals. Someday I hope to help animals somehow if I can. I think it would be awesome. Also its super cool you were born in Vietnam. That is very different and I have wondered how different Vietnam is to America.

    1. Hi! Thank you! Haha it's weird how parents just decide to legally name you something, and are like, JK we're going to call you this instead--talk about an identity crisis. Hmm, in terms of how Vietnam is different to America. I think that the culture is definitely different. Vietnam is more family-oriented than the States and the weather. GIRL THE WEATHER IS PHENOMENAL IN VIETNAM. It's actually been a long time since I've been back and all I can rely on are my memories, but I hope to go back soon to see how it has changed in the last 10 years.

  12. Hi, Michelle! This may be weird, but we may or may not have met at some point. I go to some of the MGC events some times because I know and/or are related to people in TKO, Lambda, Phi Dee, LDPsi, and aKDPhi! I don’t know if we’ve officially met, but hello! My name is Julie! Nice to meet you :)

  13. Hi Michelle, it is nice to meet you! I too am a senior here at OU. I loved all the pictures you included, really helps us get to know you a bit better. I love animals and your dog is so cute. I relate so hard to not being able to read. I am so busy with work and school it has been a while since I have read a book that was not for school. Good luck this semester!

  14. Hello Michelle! Kinda odd that your parents didn't just choose that name from the start if they ended up liking it so much. You and I have a few things in common, we both live to eat and enjoy singing. Growing up I always thought singing was for weird people but in high school I took a choir class and found out how easy it was. My signing definitely isn't great because I'm a bass and my voice is so low I pretty much just have had to talk to match the bass notes. I'm very jealous at the guys that are able to hit the high notes. I'm looking forward to reading some of your stories.

  15. Michelle, what an interesting story about your name! Congrats on your last semester almost being over! I’m glad that you’ve gotten adjusted to everything since coming to college, I was in the same situation coming from a sheltered family so I know how you feel! I love that you “live to eat” that is awesome! You should check out this place called cafĂ© Kakao in Okc it is delicious! Thanks for sharing and nice meeting you!

  16. I love the story behind your nickname, though your birth name is really cool too. My parents chose my sister’s name for its meaning, but when I asked them why they chose my name, they gave the same explanation yours did—they just heard it and liked it. Funny how that works. As for book recommendations, I don’t know if you like YA or not, but The Raven Cycle is a really great series by Maggie Stiefvater with comedy, romance, some light fantasy elements, and a little bit of horror. Congrats on your upcoming graduation, and good luck with the College of Pharmacy!

  17. Hi Michelle!
I think I visited your storybook recently, and left a comment by addressing you as Phoi. But now, knowing that you have two names is so cool! My name is Sonali, but when I go to Starbucks, I tell them my name is Sunny. I also go by Sunny if saying Sonali becomes difficult for someone to remember. Your dog is super cute! I have a German Shepherd, and he's such a big baby. I'm glad I got to meet you before the semester was over. I hope your semester went well, and wish you luck with the rest of your future endeavors! Nice to have met you!!
